Red Hawks breeze past Marian

If non-conference games are a test before the real season begins, then the Red Hawk men’s basketball team passed with flying colors in its most recent attempt.

Ripon (2-1) took down Marian 99-66 last week Saturday at home by dominating every aspect of the game.

“I was pleased with how we played,” coach Bob Gillespie said. “Some of the things we stressed [following the first two games] we saw improvement on.”

Marian hung with the Red Hawks early on, as Ripon clung to a six-point lead after six minutes.

Ripon kicked the hammer down from there, going on a 10-point run before the end of the half to take an 18-point advantage into the break.

The Red Hawks crashed the boards in the first half, with Taylor Koth collecting 13 of his game-high 16 rebounds. Ripon collected 50 in the game compared to 26 for Marian.

“I’ve never had a player do that before,” Gillespie said of Koth’s 13 first half boards. “He’s very aggressive. The great rebounders, rebound out of their area. He assumes every shot is going to miss.”
