Red Hawks open with non-conference win

The Red Hawks football team got off on the right foot with a season-opening 20-10 win over Wisconsin Lutheran last week Saturday.

And feet were the focus for Ripon, as it dominated the ground game with 297 yards rushing. Kicker Jacob Gahart also was key, connecting on two field goals in the game — each from 38 yards out.

Coach Ron Ernst credited the experienced offensive line and hard running for the success on the ground.

“Our offensive line experience showed and our backs ran hard,” he said. “The slot backs blocked well, Brad Johnson, John Pacek and Mike Crusan.”

Ernst noted that Pacek has an especially good day, catching six passes for 56 yards and rushing for 56 yards as well on nine carries.

Ripon fought through some mistakes and nerves to secure the non-conference victory.

“We performed like a team that played for the first time of the year,” coach Ron Ernst said. “We had positives in all three phases of the game, yet there were some opportunities for teachable moments. I expect us to be better next week.”
