Red Hawks take three out of four from Carroll

For weeks Ripon College baseball head coach Bob Gillespie has remained steadfast in his belief that his team’s early struggles and difficult schedule would be beneficial when the conference games rolled around.

After the first four, he seems to be correct.

The Red Hawks flexed their muscles in all facets of the game during last week’s series with Carroll University.

“Going into the conference season we played Whitewater, Stevens Point and some really good teams in Florida,” Gillespie said. “Starting the Carroll series our players felt like we had a lot to prove.”

Last week Thursday, with the Pioneers visiting for Ripon’s first home games of the 2011 season, seniors Kurt Roeder and Jason Wierschke displayed themselves as a powerful one-two punch at the top of Gillespie’s rotation. The Red Hawks took the doubleheader by scores of 10-7 and 3-1.
