When the winningest coach in Ripon High School football history stepped down a few months ago, it became obvious it was time to search for the next coach.
But the Ripon Area School District didn’t find a single successor to Rick Kelm.
They found two.
Al Schraeder and Marty Moldenhauer, assistant coaches under Kelm, will assume the roles of co-coach for the Tigers.
But the decision to hire both as head coach wasn’t made entirely by choice. It was by necessity.
“Basically, nobody was prepared to take on that task on their own,” said Richard Zimman, superintendent of the district. “Everyone’s plate was already very full.”
The district tried to find a sole successor to Kelm, but without success.
“We did not have any qualified internal applicants, and we did not have any qualified external applicants,” Zimman said.
