Ripon athletes shine in 2009

Taylor Wurtz was one of several standouts for Ripon athetics in 2009.

When the ball drops in Times Square — well, an hour later for those of us in the central time zone — 2009 will be history.

But, it’s our own, personal history that determines how others perceive us.

If you live in Ripon, you can’t help but be proud of the teams and athletes that helped made 2009 another banner year for the city and helped shape people’s perceptions of Ripon athletes’ skills, strength and spirit.

Still being relatively new to the Ripon sports scene, I paged through the 2009 issues of the Commonwealth this week looking for the top sports stories of the year. I discovered there was no shortage of winners in 2009.

So, let’s take a look at some of the sports stories that made the last year so, well, historic.

THE END OF AN ERA

Early in 2009, the Ripon Tigers girls’ basketball team was flying high, hoping for a state championship run.

That dream almost became a reality.

The girls’ won the their third-straight regional championship with a 65-51 win over Campbellsport.
