Ripon golf team swings into season with a high number of seniors

Ben Ermatinger, left, and Marcus Pollesch follow through with their swings during the first day of practice. They are two of eight seniors on this year’s team.

The Ripon High School golf team enters this season with a senior-laden group of athletes.

How that will play out remains anybody’s guess.

“I think the first couple of weeks, because we were mostly hitting inside with a little bit of chipping outside and only got to the course a couple of days, it is a little early to make too many guesses, but I think we are going to be competitive; I think we are going to be in the mix,” Ripon head coach Rick Kelm said.

Among the seniors on this year’s team are Alex Kranz, Alex Kuharski, Ben Ermatinger, Chase Niederkorn, Lucas Eberhart, Landon Fenner, Marcus Pollesch and Sam Vander Plas.

Of them, Eberhart, Fenner and Vander Plas were varsity regulars on last year’s squad, which finished second in the conference.

They, along with the other seniors and some talented underclassmen, will be relied upon this season to pick up their game.

The Tigers lost three of their top golfers from last year to graduation, including lone state-qualifier Michael Lueptow. Ross Shohoney and Michael Birschbach also are no longer on the team.
