Ripon golfers experience mixed success in the Dells

Landon Fenner chips the ball out of the rough during a match last year. He led the way for the Tigers during their season-opening competition last week Friday.

The Ripon High School golf team teed off their season last week Friday at the Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

While no team scores were available because not all teams got all 18 holes in, Ripon was led on the day by Landon Fenner.

The senior shot an eight-over-par 80, which was the seventh-best score among the individuals from the 18 schools in attendance.

Lucas Eberhart was second on the team with an 88 and was followed by Sam Vander Plas (88), Alex Kranz (92) and Marcus Pollesch (99).

“I think it is a typical first-go after a long winter,” Ripon Head coach Rick Kelm said. “We had some very good play on some holes by our players, but everybody had a couple rough holes in some pretty tough weather conditions; high winds. Landon rallied very well on the back-nine on Friday and ended up shooting an 80 for the 18 holes, which I thought was a very good first 18.”

The Tigers also competed last week Saturday at the Baraboo Country Club, but only got nine holes in before the competition was suspended due to weather.

Leading Ripon through nine holes were Eberhart (44), Pollesch (45), Vander Plas (46), Kranz (52) and Chase Niederkorn (59).
