The Ripon High School girls’ tennis team’s season came to an end last week Wednesday at the Whitewater Division 2 Sectional.

But it wasn’t without a fight.

The Tigers, who did not qualify anyone for this weekend’s state tournament, placed second in the 18-team field with 30 points, matching their finish from a season ago.

“Securing a second-place team finish in an 18-team field is no small accomplishment in this sectional tournament,” Ripon head coach Buzz Rasmussen said. “Finishing second to the perennial powerhouse Edgewood also is no small accomplishment.

“Edgewood is a private school with enormous recruiting advantages who annually competes with top-ranked players through its entire lineup and who typically qualifies all of its players for the state tournament. Pointing out these advantages is not meant to be an excuse for our team when we compete in this sectional. Rather Edgewood’s dominance is a reality when it comes to its ranking among top teams in the state.”
