Tiger girls' basketball team shocks Freedom 39-34

For the past season and a half, Ripon High School girls’ head basketball coach Jason Wickstrom has been preaching “baby steps.”

The Tigers may have taken a giant leap last week Friday.

Facing a Freedom team that was undefeated in the conference (3-0) and had lost only one game all year (6-1), they went into its gym and came away with a 39-34 upset.

The win marks Ripon’s third straight, after it began the season with four-consecutive losses. The three victories also exceed its total number of wins from last season.

“We talked about doing the little things [right],” Wickstrom said. “We have had two weeks to kind of prepare for Freedom and get better at a lot of the things that we need work on and a lot of the things that we have been doing well and the girls are really taking to heart how to practice and really listen well. Before this, I think they just did not really know how to prepare for a game, but I think they are realizing it and now they are executing it and understanding how to play basketball. We have always had the effort, but now the execution is starting to come.”
