For the third-straight season, the Ripon High School volleyball team will be moving on to the second round of the regional tournament.
The Tigers swept Freedom in three games Tuesday night to advance to Thursday’s regional quarterfinals, where they will travel to Waupun to take on the Warriors.
They won the three games 25-23, 25-15 and 25-16. The match took place at Ripon High School.
“We had a lot of great positives going for us [Tuesday],” Ripon head coach Tracy Landerman said. “First playoff match, we are in front of our home crowd and we take it in three; that is huge. It is huge for the girls. I am proud of them. I am glad they had the opportunity to do it the way they did it [Tuesday] and am excited that we are able to go onto the next round.”
The match did not start off easily for the No. 6-seeded Tigers as the first game was back and forth for the majority of the way. The No. 11 seeded Irish actually led 23-22, before the Tigers scored the final three points to take the game.
“That first game we got caught scrambling quite a bit and did not really take advantage of our offense,” Landerman said. “So they kind of controlled the tempo of the game because they were able to do a little bit more offensively ... but we did what we needed to do to keep it close and pull off the win.”
